A definite to watch this coming Sunday is BBC’s documentary profiling the late Belfast poet Derek Mahon. The Poetry Nonsense will be aired on RTE One at 11.10pm Thursday 29 October 2020
Mahon takes viewers on a personal journey from his childhood home in Glengormley, Belfast, his secondary schooling in Belfast Academical Institution, third-level education in Trinity College, Dublin, and on to London where he worked as a journalist and screenplay writer for the BBC.
Throughout the film, there are contributions from fellow Belfast poets, including the late Seamus Heaney, Michael Longley, Gerald Dawe and Frank Ormsby. There are also contributions and evaluations of the poet’s work from Hugh Haughton, Patricia Craig, Terence Browne and Edna Longley.
