THE CLARE ISLAND SURVEY

In this quietly impressive sequence Seán Lysaght celebrates the west of Ireland landscape and seascape as represented in the variety of its birdlife and commemorates a biological survey (co-ordinated by Robert Lloyd Praeger between 1909 and 1911). In poems which comprehend parallels between the creative imagination and the spirit of scientific enquiry, the author manages continually to renew his experience in a series of encounters with the natural world which leaves him perplexed, tantalized and revitalized.

'These lyrics of Seán Lysaght's . . . dramatise the delicate balance and consolation of nature triggered by the disturbed (and disturbing) human world. It is an act of love these . . . poems perform, conscious all the while of their own vulnerability.'

                                                 — Gerald Dawe, The Irish Times

'These poems are powerful and resonant. What is so immediately attractive is the bright and sharply focused imagery.'

Paddy Bushe, Poetry Ireland Review
