John
Montague was born in Brooklyn, NY, in 1929, and reared on the
family farm in County Tyrone. He now lives in County Cork. He
has taught in France, Canada and the US, where he was Poet-in-Residence
at the NY State Writers' Institute. For much of his career he
taught at UCC.
His major publications include The Rough Field, The
Great Cloak, The Dead Kingdom, Mount Eagle and
Smashing the Piano. His collections of stories include
Death of a Chieftain. Collected Poems appeared in 1995,
the year he received the America Ireland Fund Literary Award.
In 1998 he became first Ireland Professor of Poetry.
