September 2013 – Poem of the Month

The Orchard

Michelle O'Sullivan by Suella Holland

How I have carried you,
the rough cheek of my grief
against yours,

unaware until now
that I have lumbered
these days pale and red.

I sit down,
cautious that you
are still with me,

and I let you touch
the last hours
of my face

before the grief
lets us go
and we move from this place.
